All four acronyms describe optimizing to appear in AI-generated answers. The industry has not settled on one name, so here is what each emphasizes and which one to use when.
GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
The most common academic and agency term. Emphasizes that the engines generate answers rather than retrieve pages. If you read a research paper on this field, it will say GEO.
AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
The oldest term, predating modern LLMs. Originally covered featured snippets and voice assistants. Today it is often used for question-and-answer content strategy specifically.
AIEO: AI Engine Optimization
The plain-language umbrella: optimize for the AI engines people actually use. It is the clearest term for business owners, which is why we use it.
LLMO: Large Language Model Optimization
The most technical framing, focused on how models represent your brand internally, in training data as well as at retrieval time.
Does the name matter?
Only for finding help. The work underneath every label is the same: entity structuring, schema, citations, answer-shaped content, and monitoring. Judge a provider by whether they measure actual AI answers before and after, not by which acronym they sell. Ours starts with a free audit of what the engines say about you today.
Is GEO different from AIEO?
In practice no. GEO is the researcher's term and AIEO the operator's term for the same discipline: earning presence inside AI-generated answers.
